Post this on the criminal defense forum. Make sure you show up at your first court date, and ask for a court appointed attorney. See my Answers and Legal Guides on child abuse for more information about the legal issues raised by your inquiry. Please keep in mind that although my Answers and Legal Guides are often informative, they are no substitute for legal advice from an attorney you have retained for consultation or representation. There are always exceptions to the general rules. To find my Answers and Legal Guides, click on my photo. Yes, you can and should plead not guilty at your arraignment. The maximum penalty for Assault 4 is 365 days in jail and a $5,000 fine. To get a public defender appointed either call the court you are charged in (phone number is often on the summons, but if not look the court up on google) or just show up to court on your court date and ask the judge to appoint the public defender.

Whatever you do, do show up at court. You should call some criminal attorneys to discuss your case. You will be able to gather a bit of information that way. Additionally, many local bar associations offer reduced fee consults. If you are King County, call the King County Bar Association and ask for lawyer referral, reduced fee clinics, advice, etc.

You don't mention if CPS is involved, but either way, I would strongly advise not going forward without a lawyer. This type of charge will haunt you for a long time, if not forever and the money spent on an attorney is well spent. You might contact the Northwest Justice project to see if they can help you.
