My husband got into a car crash five years ago. The people drove away fine but then waited two years to sue him but he did not find out til after the court date he was sued. He moved out of state and only found out about it because his drivers licence was red flagged. He is the only one working, we live with my family and our year old son. One car and no other belongings. We have been so worried about this because the sum is so high we could never just pay it off in a lump sum. 33,000 is alot to pay by a low income family.

You should contact your automobile insurance company immediately. You may be too late to request that the default be set aside (it is unclear to me when the court date was), but if it is still possible your insurance company would generally provide an attorney to handle this for you.

Your auto insurance is obligated to help if you notify them timely. Thereafter, there are low income attorney referral agencies in nearly every part of our country. Contact one of them and ask for help.
