On the ticket the officer marked the reason for my school zone speeding ticket as "Construction Zone" instead of "School Zone."

I have proof from city engineers that there was no permit for construction at the time of the ticket, so the construction charge would not stand up in court. The problem, however, is that the ticket time is written as 8 minutes before the school zone time would be over (says I got it at 3:57 pm, zone ends at 4:05 pm), which would make it a school zone violation even without it being marked as one. I feel it was later than 4:05 pm when I got the ticket though (I have no proof of this unfortunately). Do you think I can cite his incorrect marking as extra proof he may not have been paying much attention, and gotten the time wrong?

You can sure try. His sloppy work may have afforded you an opportunity to avoid the school zone aspect of the ticket. You can also talk with the prosecutor, or better yet, have a lawyer talk with the prosecutor about getting this reduced to a more minor violation. Finally, it is often worth challenging a ticket because you can get a dismissal if the officer doesn't show for the trial date.

The officer can always reissue the ticket. However, you can use the sloppy police work to perhaps discredit the officer's memory, evidence, or other areas of the case against you.
