Someone stole my truck and took everything they could from it?

The police have someone in custody. Do I need to get a lawyer to make sure he is prosecuted for auto theft? I told the detective working the case I want to press charges.

No. The district attorney's office decides if charges will be filed. You can stay in contact with the Detective and make your wishes known for charges to be referred to the DA office. If charges are brought you can make contact with the victim witness coordinator to be kept apprised of what will be happening, and to provide information regarding restitution being made a part of any resolution resulting in either a conviction or a deferred sentence. You could consider a civil action, but you may be better off with an enforceable restitution order.

You can file a petition for conversion in civil court for up to two years; you should know by then if the suspect will bear a conviction so you may seek to recover restitution as Mr. Pate has recommended.
