Although the jurisdictional limit is $30,000, can I get more than that awarded by a jury?

A jury is not bound/limited by the jurisdictional amount. I have seen verdicts rendered in the municipal department that exceeded the jurisdictional amount.

Assuming you know what you're doing and amend your pleadings to fit the proofs, theoretically tiu can recover any amount at trial. However, there is also some case law that suggests this may not be the case. Either way your ability to recover anything depends upon many factors juries are skeptical these days. Trial is always a risk, especially now.

Mr. Hoffman correctly points out that you may be awarded more than the jurisdictional limit if you get the right verdict and properly amend your pleadings. But as my colleague stated that without an attorney, it will be difficult for you to achieve any positive monetary result.

It is important that you consult with an injury attorney to make sure you are able to fully recover any verdict you may be awarded. The last thing you want to happen is for your verdict to be reduced because of a procedural step you failed to take.

Yes. A municipal jury can award any amount that they see fit. However, asking the jury for more money than the amount requested in the pleadings is a strategy that can backfire. It invites the defense lawyer to tell the jury what was plead and argue that you don't really believe the case is worth what you're asking for. This strategy also can backfire if someone on the jury is aware of the jurisdictional limit, or feels that you are insulting their intelligence. These are decisions for a skilled trial lawyer based upon experience.
