Should I plea "Not Guilty" and go to court for "Parked in Disabled parking" citation ?

I drove into Austin Community College parking lot that had many empty "Disabled parking" spaces. I drove into one of them because it is near to the pedestrain crossing, and drop -off my son who needs to cross the road. After my son had crossed the road, I left the parking lot and head off for dinner. Several days later, I received a citation for parking in Disabled parking space, together with a picture showing my car in the disabled parking space. It state that I may be fined up to $542. Should I just not contest it and pay the fine, or should I go to court to contest it? Will I pay more fine if I choose to contest it in court? Thanks in advance.

In Austin, parking tickets are civil violations, not criminal. They carry only a possible fine as a penalty, not jail time, although you can be arrested on a warrant that can be issued for "failure to appear" and take care of parking tickets. If you have any evidence or witnesses to prove that you did not leave the car, get it together and you can go talk to a sort of "hearing officer" down at the municipal court building. If you can convince him or her that the car was not parked, (s)he has the power to dismiss the ticket. I'm not sure if "standing" in a disabled parking space is a violation. If it is, you may be cooked.

It also might be worth going to court to speak with the Judge to explain the situation. Depending on the Judge, he might lower the fine amount.

It would probably be a good idea to go to court on your scheduled court date and talk with the prosecutor and/or Judge to explain the situtation. If your son has any special reasons (injured body part, etc.) why you needed to drop him off closer to the door, mention that to them and bring evidence, such as a doctor's note, to back up your argument. I would also explain that you never exited the vehicle.
