I brought a car yesterday from a local dealer. In Alabama, how long do you have to void a contract?

It's a common myth that you have any "cooling off" time when you buy a car. Some states have car buyer's bill of rights, but that only applies to new cars, or if a used car buyer specifically bought that right. Otherwise, if the right to cancel in 3 days or any other time frame isn't in the contract you signed, then you don't have the right to change your mind about the contract you entered into. Check your own state's Attorney General website to verify this. they often address this because it's such a common-held belief, but generally only a few kinds of contracts have this right --home loans, home remodelling contracts, door-to-door sales, gym contracts, etc. Never car purchases. Car dealers know people are confused about this, so they use high-pressure tactics, and maybe they imply you can sign a contract and then try to cancel it. But dealers, to protect themselves often put signs in their dealerships that basically scream NO COOLING OFF PERIOD so they can defend themselves against people who get buyer's remorse. And I'm guessing your contract, had you bothered to actually read its tiny print, made clear that the buyer could not cancel the contract and had to honor it. Used cars are usually but not always sold "as is." That means you and to do your own inspection, or hire your own mechanic to inspect the car BEFORE signing anything. That's not to write you wouldn't have some arguments to "rescind" (cancel) the sale because of fraud, perhaps. but you haven't provided any facts about any fraud. You didn't see the infested roaches and ants? Your fault for not inspecting. The car wouldn't start? Did you have a mechanic inspect it? Were you told by the dealer in writing the car had no bugs? Were you given a warranty about the starter/transmission? If not, fraud will be very difficult to prove.

Found the following Q&A's on the Ala Attorney General web site. Not good news for you. If I buy a vehicle is there a certain time period that I can return it to the dealer if I change my mind about my purchase? No. Once you purchase a vehicle you cannot return it to the dealer simply because you have changed your mind, unless your purchase contract specifically allows for such returns. I bought a car "as is," and it has been giving me problems ever since I drove it off the lot. Can I get my money back? No. When a vehicle is purchased "as is," it means the seller is not liable for anything that is wrong with it. Alabama's Lemon Law does not apply to used cars.
